Omega-3 is a form of polyunsaturated essential fatty acid that is important for numerous functions in the body, including cell membrane health and function, with various functions related to your cardiovascular, respiratory, immune, and endocrine (hormonal) systems. The omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are found in fatty fish, shellfish and algae while alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is found in other foods, including plant-based sources such as flaxseeds and soybeans.
